Desert tour from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga 3 days – itinerary:
Departure: 8:00 AM from Marrakech
Your adventure begins as you leave your hotel or riad in Marrakech and embark on a breathtaking journey across the High Atlas Mountains. After descending from the highest point, you’ll take a left turn toward the historic Telouet Kasbah. Once the stronghold of the Glaoui family, known as the "Lords of the Atlas," this impressive site now stands in ruins, revealing the passage of time through its weathered walls. Despite its condition, the far end of the Kasbah surprises visitors with its unexpected decorative features. Continuing south, you'll follow the stunning Ounila Valley, where vibrant rock and soil colors mingle with charming Berber villages and modest Kasbahs. As you approach your next destination, you’ll arrive at Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou, where you’ll likely enjoy a delicious lunch. Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou is one of Morocco’s nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is renowned as the most iconic Kasbah in the country. Its traditional earthen architecture is expertly adapted to the local climate, harmonizing with the surrounding natural and social landscape. Dating back to the 17th century, this site has also served as a picturesque backdrop for numerous classic Hollywood and biblical films. After a brief stop in Ouarzazate, your journey continues south over the Tizi-n-Tinfifte Pass toward Zagora. As you descend, you'll be captivated by the lush oasis filled with palm trees, signaling the entrance to the Draa Valley, known for its impressive variety of dates—44 to be exact! The harvest season begins in September and lasts for about a month, making Zagora a prime destination for selecting the freshest and tastiest dates. Finally, you will spend a magical night at Zagora Camp.
After enjoying breakfast while watching a magical sunrise, you’ll continue your journey to Tamgroute. Famous for its stunning green-glazed pottery, this village is definitely worth a visit. You'll also explore the ancient Quranic library, home to exquisite hand-written Arabic texts. In the afternoon, you'll make your way to M’hamid, the gateway to the desert and the last stop along the asphalt road. Here, in the Erg Lihoudi dunes, you'll pause for a delicious lunch at a desert oasis. From there, you'll drive 60 kilometers through the desert to reach the magnificent Erg Chegaga dunes, which rise 300 meters high. These remote dunes are a true escape from civilization, where the extraordinary silence and vast expanse of sand create a serene atmosphere. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to take a one-hour camel ride, immersing yourself in the desert experience. As night falls, you’ll enjoy dinner and spend a magical evening at a luxury camp, featuring private bathrooms, comfortable beds, and beautiful Moroccan furnishings.
After breakfast, we embark on a captivating journey across the diverse desert scenery of Morocco. As we traverse the landscape, you'll arrive at the dry Iriqui Lake, where you might even witness a mirage shimmering in the heat. This is also a great opportunity to search for small fossils that tell the story of this unique environment. Our lunch stop will be in Foum Zguid, the first village after the desert. The name “Foum” translates to “mouth,” referring to the source of the Zguid River. From Foum Zguid, we’ll travel northward, passing by striking rock formations on our way to the charming town of Taznakht. Known for its exquisite Berber carpets and rugs, Taznakht offers a glimpse into local craftsmanship, with opportunities to see women skillfully weaving at their looms. Continuing our adventure, we’ll cross the High Atlas Mountains again, this time via a different scenic route. You will arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon, concluding an unforgettable desert trip that showcases the breathtaking beauty of Morocco.
